Infrastructure & Land Use Committee: Metropolitan Washington Council of Government (COG) Briefing5/17/2024 On May 14, 2024, MCCC’s Infrastructure and Land Use Committee received a briefing from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government (COG). The briefing was provided by COG’s Clark Mercer, Executive Director and Kanti Srikanth, Deputy Executive Director for Metropolitan Planning. COG’s functions include preparing plans enabling the region to receive federal funding, providing members with research and data to inform decision-making, and offering a wide range of programs, including commuter services, cooperative purchasing, technical assistance and grants, and public outreach campaigns.
To accomplish these functions, COG focuses on solutions for several of the Metropolitan Washington's key policy challenges, such as equity, housing, climate priorities, Metro’s long-term financial stability, electric vehicle deployment, and regional infrastructure. The briefing included a discussion about DMVMoves, a regional planning initiative with Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) that will set a vision for comprehensive regional transit planning and WMATA’s funding needs.
