Dr. Anne Khademian, Chair of the Economic Development Committee and Executive Director of the Universities at Shady Grove, led a discussion with the Economic Development Committee on April 6, 2022. USG 2.0 is a strategic plan to help shape the future direction of Montgomery County's higher education center. Dr. Khademian focused her briefing on the USG 2.0 focus on Montgomery County's workforce and the attraction of retention of talent.

Tax Season Briefing from Maryland Comptroller Peter FranchotMarch 2, 2022
On March 2, 2022, MCCC's Economic Development Committee received a briefing from Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot. Comptroller Franchot, a former Delegate from Montgomery County who now resides in Takoma Park, told the Committee that for the third year in a row the deadline for submitting the Maryland taxes was moved. Comptroller Franchot also discussed the State of Maryland's budget surplus and urged policymakers to take $2 billion and put it in the Rainy Day Fund to buffer the State from future economic downturns.

MCCC's Economic Development Committee met on February 2, 2022 and received a briefing from the Maryland Department of Labor's Commissioner of Labor and Industry, Matthew S. Helminak. Commissioner Helminiak focused his remarks on his division's oversight of COVID-19 and emergency temporary standards, the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act, and the duties of units within the division including Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH), Building Codes, Safety Inspections, Employment Standards, and Prevailing Wage.

Cannabis Legalization Efforts in MarylandOctober 14, 2021
MCCC's Legislative Affairs Committee held a meeting on October 14, 2021, where they were joined by Maryland Delegate Kathleen Dumais. Delegate Dumais, a member of the House Cannabis Referendum and Legislation Workgroup, provided a briefing on the expected efforts by the Maryland General Assembly to legalize the use of recreational cannabis.

On June 14, 2022 the MCCC Infrastructure and Land Use Committee met with Delegate Marc Korman. Delegate Korman represents District 16 in Montgomery County and is Chair of the Montgomery County House Delegation of the Maryland General Assembly. He is also Chair of the House Appropriations Committee's Transportation & the Environment Subcommittee. Delegate Korman shared his expertise on a variety of issues, including the federal infrastructure bill and what it means for Maryland.

On April 5, 2022 the MCCC Infrastructure and Land Use Committee received a briefing from Chris Conklin, Director of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). Mr. Conklin discussed Montgomery County's transportation initiatives and priorities, including the proposal to fund the construction of two major Bus Rapid Transit projects.

On March 8, 2022, the MCCC Infrastructure and Land Use Committee met with Commissioner Carol Rubin of the Montgomery County Planning Board. Ms. Rubin, who was appointed to her role on Oct 26, 2021, is the newest member of the Montgomery County Planning Board, which is part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

On February 8, 2022, the MCCC Infrastructure and Land Use Committee were joined by Paul Wiedefeld, General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA). In his briefing to the Committee, Mr. Wiedefeld said that a top priority over the last two years is keeping Metro's workforce safe, including vaccination or proof of testing for all metro employees.

MC Department of Environment and the Building Energy Performance Standards LegislationSeptember 14, 2021
MCCC’s Infrastructure and Land Use Committee met on September 14, 2021. This meeting featured a discussion with the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regarding the Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) legislation and how it relates to the County’s proposed Climate Action Plan. DEP Director Adam Ortiz provided remarks along with Lindsey Shaw, Manager of Energy and Sustainability Programs, Stan Edwards, Chief of DEP’s Energy, Climate and Compliance Division, and Emily Curley, Commercial Energy Program Manager.
