USG's 2.0 Plan to Meet Employer's Workforce Demand for Top Talent

April 6, 2022
Dr. Anne Khademian, Chair of the Economic Development Committee and Executive Director of the Universities at Shady Grove, led a discussion with the Economic Development Committee on April 6, 2022. USG 2.0 is a strategic plan to help shape the future direction of Montgomery County's higher education center. Dr. Khademian focused her briefing on the USG 2.0 focus on Montgomery County's workforce and the attraction of retention of talent.

Tax Season Briefing from Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot

March 2, 2022
On March 2, 2022, MCCC's Economic Development Committee received a  briefing from Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot. Comptroller Franchot, a former Delegate from Montgomery County who now resides in Takoma Park, told the Committee that for the third year in a row the deadline for submitting  the Maryland taxes was moved. Comptroller Franchot also discussed the State of Maryland's budget surplus and urged policymakers to take $2 billion and put it in the Rainy Day Fund to buffer the State from future economic downturns.

February 2, 2022
MCCC's Economic Development Committee met on February 2, 2022 and received a briefing from the Maryland Department of Labor's Commissioner of Labor and Industry, Matthew S. Helminak. Commissioner Helminiak focused his remarks on his division's oversight of COVID-19 and emergency temporary standards, the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act, and the duties of units within the division including Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH), Building Codes, Safety Inspections, Employment Standards, and Prevailing Wage.

December 1, 2021
MCCC's Economic Development Committee held a briefing on December 1, 2021, where they were joined by Andy Bauer, Vice President and Regional Executive, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Mr. Bauer provided a briefing on national and regional economic conditions and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond's role in our economy.

MCEDC'S Efforts to Create a Comprehensive Economic Strategy

October 6, 2021
MCCC's Economic Development Committee met on October 6, 2021 to hear a presentation on the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation's (MCEDC) efforts to create a Comprehensive Economic Strategy (CES). Providing the presentation were MCEDC's Bill Tompkins, Executive VP and COO, Brad Stewart, SVP of Business Development, and Nadia Khan, Counsel and Special Projects Manager.

Joint EDC/LA: Thrive Montgomery 2050

June 16, 2022
On June 16, 2022, the MCCC Economic Development Committee and Legislative Affairs Committee met jointly to receive an economic development and business climate briefing from Montgomery County Council Vice President Evan Glass. Council Vice President Glass talked about a number of issues relevant to the business community in Montgomery County, as well as  his support for Thrive Montgomery 2050, which is an update to the County's planning policy document.

Joint EDC/LA: What's Next for 5G in Montgomery County?

September 15, 2021
On September 15, 2021, MCCC held a joint Economic Development Committee/Legislative Affairs Committee meeting focused on what happens next for 5G in Montgomery County. Joining the joint committee meeting were Councilmember Hans Riemer, Ashlie Greenspan, Public Affairs Manager, Crown Castle and LaTara Harris, Regional Director, External & Legislative Affairs, AT&T.

Cannabis Legalization Efforts in Maryland

October 14, 2021
MCCC's Legislative Affairs Committee held a meeting on October 14, 2021, where they were joined by Maryland Delegate Kathleen Dumais. Delegate Dumais, a member of the House Cannabis Referendum and Legislation Workgroup, provided a briefing on the expected efforts by the Maryland General Assembly to legalize the use of recreational cannabis.

June 14, 2022
On June 14, 2022 the MCCC Infrastructure and Land Use Committee met with Delegate Marc Korman. Delegate Korman represents District 16 in Montgomery County and is Chair of the Montgomery County House Delegation of the Maryland General Assembly. He is also Chair of the House Appropriations Committee's Transportation & the Environment Subcommittee. Delegate Korman shared his expertise on a variety of issues, including the federal infrastructure bill and what it means for Maryland.

April 5, 2022
On April 5, 2022 the MCCC Infrastructure and Land Use Committee received a briefing from Chris Conklin, Director of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). Mr. Conklin discussed Montgomery County's transportation initiatives and priorities, including the proposal to fund the construction of two major Bus Rapid Transit projects.

Conversation with Carol Rubin, Montgomery County Planning Board

March 8, 2022
On March 8, 2022, the MCCC Infrastructure and Land Use Committee met with Commissioner Carol Rubin of the Montgomery County Planning Board. Ms. Rubin, who was appointed to her role on Oct 26, 2021, is the newest member of the Montgomery County Planning Board, which is part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

Briefing by Paul Wiedefled, GM and CEO of WMATA

February 8, 2022
On February 8, 2022, the MCCC Infrastructure and Land Use Committee were joined by Paul Wiedefeld, General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA). In his briefing to the Committee, Mr. Wiedefeld said that a top priority over the last two years is keeping Metro's workforce safe, including vaccination or proof of testing for all metro employees.

November 9, 2021
​MCCC’s Infrastructure and Land Use Committee met on November 9, 2021, where they were joined by Adam Ducker, CEO of RCLO, a leading real estate firm in based in Bethesda. Mr. Ducker talked about the dynamics that have driven real estate in Montgomery County, including an aging population as compared to that of Northern Virginia.

MC Department of Environment and the Building Energy Performance Standards Legislation

This meeting featured a discussion with the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regarding the Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) legislation and how it relates to the County’s proposed Climate Action Plan. DEP Director Adam Ortiz provided remarks along with Lindsey Shaw, Manager of Energy and Sustainability Programs, Stan Edwards, Chief of DEP’s Energy, Climate and Compliance Division, and Emily Curley, Commercial Energy Program Manager.
