R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center to be Honored by Montgomery County Business and Public Safety Community

February 23, 2011

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, the nation’s first and only integrated trauma center, will receive the inaugural Public Safety Government Partner of the Year Award at the Chamber’s upcoming 37th Annual Montgomery County Public Safety Awards.

The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center is regarded as one of the international standard-setters for the care of injury. It is a multidisciplinary clinical, educational and research institution dedicated to both the prevention and management of severe injury and its consequences. The Shock Trauma Center will be named as the Chamber’s Public Safety Government Partner of the Year – an award sponsored by Motorola – for its extraordinary life-saving work and for saving countless lives of public safety officers injured in the line of duty.

“This event allows the business community to honor and thank the men and women who protect the communities in which they live and work,” said Gigi Godwin, President and CEO of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. “This year, we are honored to celebrate a public sector partner that supports our local agencies in their efforts each day to protect and save lives. The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, one of our state’s crown jewels, was an overwhelming choice.”

“We are honored to be presented with this award in recognition of the dedication and lifesaving work of our physicians, nurses and all of the other members of our team,” says Thomas M. Scalea, MD, Physician-in-Chief, and the Francis X. Kelly Professor of Trauma at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. “Support from the business community, and in particular, business leaders who are part of the Chamber, is crucial to our mission, which is to save the lives of increasing numbers of Maryland residents who come to us with traumatic injuries and critical illness. We thank the Montgomery County Chamber for this prestigious award.”

The Chamber will present the award to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at its March 11 luncheon, which is the largest valor event in the Washington metropolitan area. The event attracts more than 1,000 business leaders, elected officials and members of the public safety community.
