Miller & Long Co., Inc.’s  John McMahon to Receive Spirit of Emeritus Business Leader of the Year Award at the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Dinner

Rockville, MD – Miller & Long Co., Inc.’s  Chairman John McMahon will receive the Emeritus Business Leader of the Year award at the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Business Awards Dinner. Award co-sponsors Insurance Associates, Inc. and CohnReznick LLP will present the award at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center on November 19, 2015.

As the Chairman and former President, John McMahon has led Miller & Long Co., Inc. to be a leader in concrete construction and in building a strong business community. His accomplishments include the following:

  • Building our region’s major structural concrete high-rise building projects totaling over 500 million square feet.
  • Developing an effective workforce by hiring more than 56,000 entry-level workers and training them, using the company’s merit shop philosophy, to advance workers, from walk-ons to their full potential as skilled craft professionals.
  • Supporting green practices through the implementation of energy-efficient concrete structures, the use of recycled materials, and purchasing from green vendors.
  • Community leadership: Has contributed leadership in the planning and construction of numerous projects, including the stadium at the Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Maryland, and the Barns at Franklin Park Performing Arts Center in Loudon County, Virginia. He is past president of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Metro Washington; a prior trustee for Maryland Compact for the Greater Washington Board of Trade; was appointed by Governor William Donald Schaefer to the Construction Industry Employers’ Advisory Council; and is a member of the Washington Building Congress and the District of Columbia Building Industry Association.  He has served on the Board of Trustees for West Nottingham Academy in Colora, Maryland, and for Landon School where he also chaired annual giving campaigns. He also served on the Board of Trustees for St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Bethesda, Maryland.  He currently co-chairs the Capital Campaign Committee for Suburban Hospital’s Campus Enhancement in Bethesda, Maryland.
  • Developing the next generation: Partnered in the effort to resolve the disconnect between job opportunities and employability through education and job training programs. He is founder and board president of the DC Students Construction Trades Foundation.
  • Recognized as an industry and civic leader: Named ABC’s Ted C. Kennedy Contractor of the Year (1990); Grassroots Member of the Year (2001); and Eagle Award honoree (2002). Recipient of leadership and lifetime achievement awards from numerous organizations, including the D.C. Metropolitan Subcontractors Association; Suburban Hospital; and the Washington Business Journal as a Greater Washington Green Business Award winner and an Outstanding Director for his thirty-plus year commitment as a director for United Bank and United Bankshares, Inc.
