June 20, 2013

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) welcomed the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Government Contracting Network (GovConNet) and more than 300 small businesses to the 2nd Annual NRC Small Business Seminar and Matchmaking Event. The event included remarks from expert speakers, matchmaking, speed mentoring, exhibitors and networking. The agenda included welcome remarks from Bill Borchardt, Executive Director for Operations at NRC, Gigi Godwin, President & CEO of MCCC and a message from Antonio Doss, Acting District Director DC Metropolitan Office, U.S. Small Business Administration.

In her opening remarks, Allison Macfarlane, Chairman of the NRC, said this event last year boasted the highest attendance for any NRC small business seminar and this year attendance has increased.

Small businesses play an essential role in economic growth.  Vonna Ordaz, Director of Office of Small Business and Civil Rights, said 2 out of 3 new jobs are created from small businesses. Therefore, it is important to offer programs such as this with the mission to help small businesses be successful. Ms. Ordaz shared with participants that an outcome of last year’s matchmaking session resulted in a small business contracting awarded in the amount of $12.7 million for financial services.

The program offers a great opportunity to network and to market your services directly to the agency as well as other potential partners, said Anthony Briggs, Small Business Program Manager. Anthony showed how small businesses can navigate online for NRC contracting opportunities and other key websites such as,

Each expert speaker presented an overview of their office’s responsibilities as well as tips for where to find opportunities to work with NRC and how to best position your business to stand out in the proposal process. Offices represented were Administration, Information Services, Nuclear Reactor Regulation and General Counsel.

The presentations were followed by matchmaking, which was once again a popular element of the event. Eight NRC offices hosted 9-minute matchmaking sessions with pre-selected businesses. Every registrant had the opportunity to apply for matchmaking.

MCCC’s GovConNet Council members hosted exhibit booths in addition to a new feature called, “Ask the Business Doctor”. This speed mentoring is designed for the experts to respond to business issues in 5 minutes or less. Represented areas were legal, accounting, financial, govcon software, capture and proposals, retirement benefits and government contracting.
