2012 NIST Industry Day

Held on the Gaithersburg Campus on February 8, 2012

More than 600 local business leaders came out to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) headquarters, on February 8, 2012, to gain valuable insights on how to successfully do business with NIST and the federal government. This was the second NIST Industry Day sponsored by Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce GovConNet. This was a rare opportunity for business leaders to hear from the leadership of NIST about their expanded national mission including their accelerated focus on cybersecurity.

In addition, for the first time at NIST, participants were able to meet key representatives from many of the NIST Operating Units at exhibitor tables and to get an up-close glimpse into the agency’s operations.  Attendees were also able to take advantage of the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the presenters and network with fellow government contractors.

George Jenkins, NIST Chief Financial Officer, kicked off the program by welcoming all attendees to the NIST Campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Mr. Jenkins shared that the NIST mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.

MCCC President and CEO Gigi Godwin welcomed business leaders and discussed the Chamber’s increased emphasis on support for government contracting firms through the GovConNet programs which have, Godwin shared with the audience, “connected hundreds of companies like yours to millions in contracts resulting in thousands of new jobs.”

The NIST speakers represented six of the NIST laboratories.  In addition, the NIST program managers and acquisition personnel interacted with the attendees at exhibit tables after the formal program which allowed for commerce to continue.

The NIST Industry Day is one of several activities throughout the year that the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce presents for government contracting firms, through its GovConNet program. A similar event was held at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last December.
