Recap: Green Business Forum – Get on the Bus! Get Certified! - June 26, 2014

The “Get on the Bus! Get Certified!” Green Business Forum panelists provided attendees with lessons learned and discussed benefits and tips of becoming a Montgomery County Certified Green Business.

The panel of experts included:

  • Jennifer Woofter, President, Strategic Sustainability Consulting
  • Jim Conlon, Owner and Founder, Elysian Energy, LLC
  • Mindy Kursban, Vice President and Corporate Counsel, Family & Nursing Care
  • Susan Conley, Firm Administrator, Snyder Cohn, PC – CPAs and Trusted Advisors

Panelists recommend creating a mission statement and a blueprint to guide your company throughout the process. Begin by implementing cost cutting procedures and speaking with your building manager to ask what requirements are already met. Be sure to measure performance and track cost savings throughout the year to see the impact and to speed up the recertification process.

Benefits of being a green certified business extend beyond helping the environment and strengthening the business’ bottom line. The panelists noted that green certification is an employee recruiting tool and also strengthens employee retention.

To keep employees engaged between the initial certification and recertification, ask team members to pay attention to the impacts of being a green certified business and report back to the rest of the staff.

Businesses that submit their application to become a Montgomery County Certified Green Business by August 1, 2014, and are shortly thereafter certified, will be promoted on their own County Bus PSA.
