On Nov. 12, MCCC Economic Development Committee Vice Chair Bill Robertson of Adventist HealthCare, and Co-Chair Stew Edelstein of The Universities at Shady Grove, hosted guest speakers Cathy Riley, Vice President of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, and Dick Story, Director of the Howard County Economic Development Authority.  Each guest speaker presented their organization's approach to economic development.

Myth: All chambers of commerce are affiliated with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Fact: There is no ‘mother ship’ - The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) is an independent membership association that is not affiliated with any national, state or local organization. While MCCC may work with other chambers and regional organizations in support of business advocacy, it also operates independent of Maryland state and local chambers.

The Chamber's inaugural GovConNet Committee meeting featured a powerful presentation on Cyber Security by Eric "Rick" Doten, chief scientist for Lockheed Martin's Center for Cyber Security Innovation. In providing a broad overview of the seemingly endless scope of cyber security threats that face governments, businesses and individuals throughout the world, Doten presented the group with a plethora of data and anecdotes, to demonstrate the enormity of the challenges.

Maryland State Treasurer Nancy Kopp met with the MCCC Legislative Committee, apprising the group on the state's most recent revenue projections, long-term structural deficit challenges, state pension fund issues, its AAA bond rating and other fiscal matters. Kopp also gave members an overview of the sweeping duties of the State Treasurer's Office, including her key role as part of the three-member Maryland Board of Public Works, along with the Governor and Comptroller, and her leadership of several other state-constituted boards.
