  • Jim McClelland, Emergency Management Specialist, Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security
  • Joe Corona, Outreach Coordinator, Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security

Topic: Small Business Emergency Preparedness

Neil Simons, Co-Chair of the Small Business Committee, welcomed MCCC members and guest speakers Jim McClelland and Joe Corona from the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security for a discussion on how small businesses can be prepared for emergencies.

The Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (OEMHS) has worked hard to educate residents on ways to be prepared in the case of emergencies which could be natural, technology, infrastructure, or human caused.  Mr. McClelland provided an overview of the OEMHS’s Business Continuity Guide designed specifically for small businesses. The components of a continuity plan include preparing for an emergency and the immediate reactions but also planning for how to keep your business functioning in the aftermath of a major disruption. While it is not possible to prevent all situations from happening, continuity plans help to minimize the disruption.

Mr. Corona highlighted many of the resources available to residents and businesses including the Alert Montgomery notification system which notifies subscribers to major crisis, emergency or severe weather event such as gas leaks, hazardous materials events and flash floods.

They distributed a number of materials for attendees to take back to their businesses, including Business Preparedness “Get Ready in 5 Easy Steps” and Family Preparedness handouts. MCCC has extra copies for those unable to attend.
