Guest Speaker: Lily Qi, Special Assistant, Office of the Montgomery County Executive

Topic: Comprehensive Economic Strategy Update

The vice-chair of the Economic Development Committee, Leslie Ford Weber, welcomed MCCC members and introduced the guest speaker, Lily Qi, Special Assistant, Office of County Executive Ike Leggett who provided an update to the Comprehensive Economic Strategy.  She framed the presentation around where we are today and where we are going in the future.

She began by providing a brief background that the County was moving in the direction of an independent economic development corporation and worksource Montgomery.  They will be up and running by September 2016. The economic strategy is seen as a guiding document to express shared goals as a community. The Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy is informed by data. There has been a lot of participation and, most recently, the Economic Development Corporation board has provided input.  The draft will be posted on April 1.

Ms. Qi walked through some highlights of the findings including a SWOT analysis. Montgomery County is a community of contrasts. The vision is that it is a global magnet for creative companies, technologies and people. The overarching goals of the strategy are around business vitality, talent, creative economies, and place making.

Government needs to be an active participant in realizing these goals.

Questions from attendees focused on the cost of doing business in terms of labor, energy tax, and managing incentives.
