Topic: Employment Law – Changes you need to know
Neil Simons introduced the guest speaker Marc Engel who is a partner with Lerch, Early and Brewer. Given the number of various new and updated laws at the local, state and federal level, it is important for employers to have a clear understanding as they interact with employees. Talent is one of the most important assets of a company and attracting and retaining employees as well as having clear policies when the need arises to terminate are critical to a business’s overall success.
Mr. Engle walked through the specifics of various new laws including:
· Montgomery County Earned Sick and Safe Leave (effective October 1, 2016)
· Montgomery County Minimum Wage (existing and proposed)
· Ban the Box
· New Overtime Regulations
· Maryland’s new Equal Pay for Equal Work Act of 2016
He also reviewed best practices with regard to timesheets and overtime, knowing the difference between employee and independent contractor, insurance and understanding workplace security and violence.
He finished the presentation with a list of key takeaways.
