Guest Speaker: Melanie Wenger, Director, Office of Intergovernmental Relations, Montgomery County

Josh Bokee, Co-Chair of the Legislative Affairs Committee, welcomed members and introduced our guest speaker, Melanie Wenger, Director, Office of Intergovernmental Relations, Montgomery County. Wenger discussed how Montgomery County sets priorities, priorities for the 2015 General Assembly Legislative Session, and how relationships impact results.

Wenger predicts that key issues in the 2015 General Assembly Legislative Assembly will include:

  • Taxes
  • Job creation
  • Transportation
  • Education
  • Economic vitality

Addressing the business climate in Maryland is a top priority for the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce.

The Augustine Commission report will be released in December. The Commission studied the tax structure and business climate in Maryland and plans to report on actionable solutions to aid the business climate in Montgomery County and the State of Maryland.

However, with a new administration taking office and changes in the delegation leadership it is difficult to predict how these priorities will be addressed.

Montgomery County has the largest delegation in the State of Maryland. With diverse demographics, infrastructure and economic needs, it is often difficult for the entire Montgomery County delegation to speak with one voice.

The meeting concluded with Q&A and a discussion about priorities in Montgomery County.
