Topic: Cyber Security Best Practices and Requirements

Guest Speaker: Jon Williams, Partner, PilieroMazza PLLC

Clark Kendall, Vice-Chair of the Small Business Committee, welcomed MCCC members and guest speaker, Jon Williams, Partner at PilieroMazza PLLC. Williams gave an overview of why cyber security matters and how businesses can protect themselves from threats.

There is a misperception that small businesses are not at threat, but about half of cyber security attacks are made on small businesses. Small businesses are at a bigger threat because they do not have the resources to be prepared. The consequences of not being prepared are significant and can cause data loss, time and money expense, reputational damage, and contract termination, among other things.

There are specific regulations for businesses that are working with the Federal government that also apply to subcontractors. The NIST security control manual and the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement: Safeguarding Unclassified Controlled Technical Information final rule provide information on the necessary regulations.

Companies can prepare themselves by identifying their assets, having a plan, using resources and frameworks, reviewing their agreements, and exploring cybersecurity insurance options.

Williams concluded by opening it up to questions from the MCCC members. To view the PowerPoint click here
