Guest Speaker: Roger Berliner, Councilmember, Montgomery County Council

Topic: Montgomery County Transportation

Vice-Chair of the Legislative Affairs Committee, Josh Bokee, welcomed MCCC members and introduced the guest speaker Councilmember Roger Berliner of the Montgomery County Council. Berliner met with MCCC members to discuss transportation in Montgomery County.

He began by discussing the importance of keeping the Purple Line project on track, noting the opportunities in a public-private partnership and available Federal funding. He asked that the business community help push for its implementation by communicating its importance to Governor Hogan and sharing their strategic ideas with the County Council.

He also discussed the County Executive’s proposed Independent Transit Authority and his thoughts on why the bill was withdrawn from consideration as well as other opportunities to improve transportation in the county.

In light of the recent safety concerns with Metro, Berliner and the County Council are looking at the systems in place and Metro’s existing protocols for responding to emergency situations.

Additionally, he pointed to the Council’s Transportation Priorities Letter which includes the purple line and bus rapid transit as top priorities.

He also noted that he is taking part in conversations about Uber taxi cabs, mentioning that the County Council is reviewing three bills on the subject. He supports reaching an agreement that will allow the company to offer services in the County in order to modernize our transportation system and make companies like Uber safe options for customers.

Councilmember Roger Berliner concluded by opening up the floor to MCCC members for questions and a robust discussion.
