Guest Speaker: Montgomery County Councilmember Nancy Floreen (At Large)

Vice-Chair of the Infrastructure and Land Use Committee, Gus Bauman, welcomed MCCC members and introduced the  guest speaker, Nancy Floreen, Montgomery County Councilmember (At Large). Floreen chairs the Planning, Housing & Economic Development (PHED) Committee and is a member of the Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy & Environment (T&E) Committee. She provided members with updates of the projects in front of each committee.

The Planning Board sent the Clarksburg Master Plan to the County Council for approval. Floreen said the fundamental principles of the plan remain the same as in 1994. Current discussions focus on the Ten Mile Creek Area within the Clarksburg Master Plan.

The Council is reviewing the Planning Board’s work on rewriting the zoning ordinances this week. Approximately 130 changes have already been made by the Councilmembers. Floreen hopes the final product will be a more modern document with clear language that will create more predictable time schedules for applicants. She said deadlines force people to re-evaluate how to best manage time. Creating more rules is not always helpful, but creating more predictable timeframes will benefit everyone involved.

The County Council is also preparing to host a public hearing, scheduled for February 4, on the White Oak Science Gateway Master Plan.

Other initiatives in front of the County Council include filling the open District 5 seat on the Council and appointing an applicant to Chair of the Planning Board. The Council will interview 13 applicants for the District 5 seat. The Council is scheduled to vote on the appointment to the Council on Tuesday, January 28.

Numerous attendees asked questions ranging from land use to politics. Councilmember Floreen encouraged everyone to keep her in the loop on issues of importance to them.
