March 11, 2014 Recap:

Guest Speakers: Susan Swift, Director of Community Planning and Development Services, City of Rockville and John Schlichting, Director, Planning and Code Administration, City of Gaithersburg

Vice-Chair of the Infrastructure and Land Use Committee, Gus Bauman, welcomed MCCC members and spoke about the process of the appointment of a new Planning Board Chair. MCCC will schedule meeting with candidates after the filing deadline of April 8, 2014.

Jennifer Russel, Rodgers Consulting, introduced the guest speakers, John Schlichting, Director, Planning and Code Administration, City of Gaithersburg and Susan Swift, Director of Community Planning and Development Services, City of Rockville. Schlichting and Swift presented about current and future community planning projects in Rockville and Gaithersburg.

Schlichting discussed many development projects along the Corridor Cities Transitway (CCT), such as The Watkins Mill Town Center, Orchard Pond, Quince Orchard Plaza, and Kentland Boulevard Commercial District. Other projects include the BRT line on 355, Montgomery County Fairgrounds, Monument Realty Park, Spectrum at Casey East, and Lake Forest Mall. These projects will add a variety of mixed-use, residential, office, and retail space throughout Gaithersburg.

Swift said the majority of development in Rockville is near the Twinbrook Metro. Other projects include Rockville Town Center, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), and the Rockville Pike Plan (which has had over 40 work sessions in the last 3 years).

Rockville is currently working on two regulatory initiatives with the goal of becoming more business friendly. Rockville is improving its permitting processes. Small projects including interior demolition, fences, fireplaces, sheds, decks, and garages under 500 square feet can be processed over the counter in one day. The City of Rockville also submitted sign code amendments which are awaiting approval.
