January 13, 2015 Recap

Guest Speaker: Hans Riemer, Councilmember, Montgomery County Council (At-Large)

Vice-Chair of the Infrastructure and Land Use Committee, Gus Bauman, welcomed MCCC members and introduced the guest speaker Hans Riemer, Councilmember, Montgomery County Council (At-Large).

Riemer discussed digital infrastructure and his white paper on the need for ultra high-speed networks in our county. Building data and fiber networks is being expanded in the county to serve schools and government buildings, but there wasn’t a strategy to leverage that for economic development and broader purposes.

Riemer’s proposal for building ultra high-speed networks sets to meet the goal of making Montgomery County a more attractive place to do business, being more competitive, and offering an asset that will be more valuable in the future.

These networks would diversify local economic base, attracting tech companies in the future, and leverage existing assets, such as Federal labs that the county already has.

Riemer noted the existing opportunities to build and connect networks that are expanded on in the white paper, the Great Seneca Science Corridor and White Oak.

Moving forward, Riemer is requesting that County Executive create strategy plan for fiber networks and is looking in to potential partners in the project.

Hans Riemer concluded by opening up the floor to MCCC members for questions, comments and suggestions which led to a lively discussion.
