County Councilmember George Leventhal – now in his third term on the County Council, but a new member of the Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) Committee – covered a wide range of planning, land use and economic development topics in a visit this morning to the Chamber’s Infrastructure and Land Use Committee meeting. The Chamber committee is headed by MCCC Vice-Chair Gus Bauman of Beveridge & Diamond, PC.

A self-described “pro-business liberal, progressive Democrat,” Leventhal said he is enjoying his new role on the Council’s PHED Committee and is working hard to seek compromise on many of the often controversial issues that come before the three-member committee. He noted that the economic conditions of the past few years have resulted in greater consensus among Council members on the need to support economic development, to spark job creation. Highlighting what he termed a unique strength of Montgomery County, Leventhal noted that it is a place that has managed to find a balance between “thriving urban areas, quiet suburban areas” and the preservation of “open space and agriculture.”
