Vice-Chair Judy Stephenson, OfficePRO, called the meeting to order and introduced Montgomery County Councilmember Hans Riemer.
Councilmember Riemer emphasized during his discussion that growing Montgomery County’s tax base is essential to maintaining the services that many citizens currently utilize. He emphasized the relationship between a robust business sector and reliable funding for our top-notch and highly ranked school system. In an effort to make the business climate in Montgomery County more attractive, Riemer highlighted an ongoing review of the development procedures in the County to make the process more clear and reliable.
Riemer discussed the importance of job training and developing the County’s workforce. He cited a recent presentation by regional economist, Dr. Stephen Fuller, which showed that the Washington, DC region is attractive to companies, but the County still must take steps to convince those companies to come to Montgomery County over other Washington, DC suburbs. In order to accomplish this goal, Riemer discussed a joint approach to look at job training with the Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery College and County government. He also mentioned needs in housing and structural needs in the County.
Councilmember Riemer reviewed the Council accomplishments since his election in 2010. He spoke about progress in zoning, and a banking initiative he is working on to encourage the County to do more business with local banks.
