Dr. Stewart Edelstein, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the University System of Maryland and Executive Director of The Universities at Shady Grove (USG), will be honored by the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce as the recipient of its 2011 Visionary Award.

Sponsored by Human Genome Sciences, Inc., the Visionary Award will be presented at the Chamber’s June 1 Annual Dinner. This year’s event is is themed “Winning the Future” and will be held at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Montgomery County Conference Center.

Dr. Edelsteinhas led The Universities at Shady Grove since 2002. A regional higher education center of the University System of Maryland, USG brings together undergraduate and graduate programs from nine Maryland public universities onto a single Montgomery County campus. During his tenure at USG, the number of USM partner institutions has increased, as has the number of available degree and certificate programs – now up to 70.

Dr. Edelstein also oversaw the construction of USG’s third academic building, now named the Camille Kendall Academic Center. That facility nearly tripled the enrollment capacity at USG. USG under Dr. Edelstein’s leadership has worked closely with Montgomery College and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to better articulate curriculum planning and college access initiatives within the county.  An important partnership initiative is a series of 2+2+2 programs – together with MCPS and Montgomery College – to create education and career pathways in health and technology fields. These programs place special emphasis on strengthening the pipeline for minority and first generation college student populations.

“Leaders in business and industry are defined by their ability to set a vision that guides the future success of their organization,” said Georgette “Gigi” Godwin, President and CEO of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. “Stewart Edelstein has shaped a bold vision for USG and transformed the campus into one that is truly a national model for the delivery of higher education in the 21st century.”

“Dr. Edelstein’s dynamic leadership, commitment to expanding educational opportunities, and focus on meeting key economic needs in Montgomery County have been a driving force behind USG’s remarkable 10-year record of success,” said William E. Kirwan, Chancellor of the University System of Maryland.

“Stew Edelstein has the rare quality of being ambitious both for the organization he leads and for our community, with the humility, intellect, tenacity, people skills and vision to bring substance to the ambition,” said William G. Robertson, President & CEO, Adventist HealthCare, Inc. A former MCCC Board Chair, Robertson is currently MCCC’s Vice-Chair for Economic Development, a committee which is co-chaired by Dr. Edelstein.

A member of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Dr. Edelstein serves as co-chair of the Chamber’s Economic Development Committee. He is also a member of the Montgomery County Business Roundtable for Education, the Montgomery County Bioscience Task Force, the Montgomery County Smart Growth Initiative, the Montgomery County Economic Advisory Council and the Montgomery County Life Sciences Advisory Committee and the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning’s Great Seneca Science Corridor Advisory Committee. . In 2006, Dr. Edelstein received a Community Service Award from The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program and the Chairman's Award for his contributions to the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce
